Synopsis- SPOILERS
(See the link to Jenn’s Fushigi Yuugi page on my Links page for a much better synopsis)

Miaka and Yui get sucked into a magical book, The Universe of the Four Gods, and while Yui returns home,Miaka stays and is saved by the mysterious boy with a strange mark of “ogre” on his forehead (Tamahome). As Miaka is trapped in this book world, Yui experiences what Miaka does as she reads along in the book. Miaka meets the emperor, Hotohori, who reveals that Miaka is the priestess of Suzaku, and if she gathers all seven Suzaku warriors she can summon the beast lord Suzaku and have wishes granted. Tamahome, and Hotohori are each one of the seven, as is Nuriko, a courtier who loves Hotohori and saves Miaka from a fallen gazebo. Due to injuries sustained, Miaka goes to Taiitsu-kun who sends her home, after saving her life with blood from Tamahome and Hotohori. Yui, who was still reading along in the book, gets sucked into the book in Miaka’s place. When Miaka discovers this, she returns and tries to find Yui, who has become Priestess, a neighboring and enemy land under the beast lord Seiryuu. As Miaka tries to gather the Suzaku seven, Yui, under the guidance of Nakago, tries to prevent her. With a spy in the midst of the Suzaku Seven, they prevent Suzaku from being summoned. Miaka then goes on a mission to get Yui back as a friend as well as get two artifacts needed for an attempt to summon the beast lord. Yui gets the items first and summons Seiryuu, who almost destroys Tokyo until Yui uses the last of 3 wishes to allow Miaka to summon Suzaku and save the day. The only remaining problem is: how will the relationship survive between Miaka and Tamahome when they can’t stay on the same world? The OVA’s provide a fun nifty answer to that question, if you care to follow up.

Review
I really enjoyed this series, but was a little sad to see characters I like die, but like that their spirits are still present. At the time of viewing, I felt for the struggles of Tamahome and Miaka’s on-again, off-again relationship, but in retrospect I found it annoying. And, as for Yui and Miaka, how can you not know that you haven’t been sexually assaulted? I mean, it is feasible, I’ll grant, but BOTH OF THEM DON”T KNOW?? I love Chichiri’s powers, and his hair, too, no da? Oh, and another thing, they talk about Miaka doing all this searching for the Suzaku seven, when in each instance (including the false Chiriko), THEY come in to rescue Miaka after she did something stupid.

I like the ties between the two worlds and the introduction of Keisuke (Miaka’s brother) and his friend Tetsuya, who get so involved in the story on the other side. Nakago is a bastard. Yui, you almost feel bad for her, but I can’t quite. Oh, and if Taiitsu-Kun created the four worlds, she seems to favor the Suzaku over the Seiryuu, why? Throughout the whole thing, I felt bad for unrequited love. Sigh.
Well that’s my sporadic review.
