Writing For The "Mysterious Other"
POSTED  26-AUGUST-2002

Well, I’m sitting down to write something, anything, for my front page, and I don’t know what to write. I’m going out of town on Wednesday to visit my sister in Tallahassee, so I will away for a while where I can’t update, and since I said I’d try to update this front page once or twice a week, I knew I had to write something now. (Plus I feel bad because last week I kinda copped out by posting previously written poetry.)

Not that it much matters at this point, anyways. I think at this point the only people likely to look at my page the next week while I’m gone are friends of mine that I ask about my site anyways. I don’t believe you can find my site just by pure surfing yet, so I am thinking that you are my close friends who know about my site, so I don’t have to try to impress you.

It’s weird. Whenever I sit down to put something on my site, I don’t think “Hey, now my friends can see this” or “I’ll put this on because I know my friends will like it”. I’m more in the mindset of “How will the mysterious person who stumbles onto my site feel about this, what would he/she like to see?”

My journals on the front page are all addressed to that mysterious other who I think might someday happen to stumble along, find my page, not be offended and stay out of curiosity or boredom.

I bet your thinking “OH, that’s a GREAT idea Christy”, ne? Well, don’t think I didn’t notice the sarcasm. You think I should be writing for the audience that I KNOW I have, the friends whom I KNOW actually visit the site. (Actually, I don’t believe any of my friends would actually think this, it’s just my writing for the other style…)

I think I write for the mysterious other because I DON’T know them. I don’t know when they are going to stumble onto my site. Because they don’t have any prior knowledge about me, and they will be making their first impression of me based on this page. I want to impress them. I want to interest them. Mostly, I don’t want to bore them.

I eventually want a site that people will stumble onto and find something, even just one thing, that is of interest to them. The reason I want to create a site like that is because I love finding peoples’ personal web pages, and finding something of interest and just kinda exploring the part of this person’s soul that they were willing to write up and put on the web.

Well, it looks like my nothing-to-write-about rant actually produced something to write about. That’s why I sat down to write it, cause I had a feeling that it would go somewhere.

Oh, and if you ARE one of those mysterious others that has just stumbled onto my site and are reading this (either on my front page or in the archives), WELCOME TO THIS LITTLE BIT OF MY SOUL. I hope you enjoy!
