Spice Cake

3/4 cup butter
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 eggs separated
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1 scant cup buttermilk
2 cups cake flour, sifted

Cream the butter adding the sugar gradually.
Beat until light and fluffy.
Mix in the egg yolks.
Sift the flour with the nutmeg, cinnamon, soda, cloves, and salt.
Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients beating until smooth each time.
Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks.
Fold into the batter.
Turn into nine-inch cake pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for one hour until done.
Test with a toothpick.
Serve hot sprinkled with confectioners' sugar.
