Threepenny Novel
A NaNo WriMo novel for 2007

by Christy Shorey and you

Well, that's it. Story is done. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions along the way. I came in with a total of 78,192 words this year.

Oh, and if you read the story and it says "edited for spelling and grammar" at the top - that means I ran it through the Word spelling and grammar check - I know there are still typos ;-)

About NaNo WriMo

NaNo WriMo, or National Novel Writing Month is a writing challange that takes place every November. The goal? 50,000 words in 30 days. Please see the website for more information.

How are you writing your novel this year?

This year I will be writing my novel live (where what I type will appear on the screen, and people can see what I'm writing), and adapting my story based on suggestions I get from people reading along. Much like improv, I will take their suggestions, use them, and then have to justify them in the story.

Here is an example of how it might work: Someone is reading what I write, then sends me a message like "I think Billy should jump off a cliff." I would then take that suggestion and work it into the story, perhaps like this: Billy knew how much Sarah loved her diamond studded frisbee. When he saw it being tossed carelessly over the side of the cliff, he knew he had to go after it. Without giving it a second thought, he flung himself after the prize, knowing that without it, he could never face Sarah again.

Also, to help get people involved in the earlier planning, I conducted polls to help define the four main characters I created.

I will use all the suggestions I get, however I run this novel on the same principles I learned in improv - treat it as a family show. I will NOT utilize any suggetion that would earn more than a PG-13 rating.

The main characteristics of my characters were determined by polls on my writing livejournal: nanoweylyn. The character designs were done using the eLouai's Candybar Doll Maker 3.

What does Threepenny Novel mean?

The title of my novel is "Threepenny Novel". I remember in my history of theater class learning about "Threepenny Opera," though that was years ago, and I don't remember much other than the title. But that's okay since the name is the only thing I've borrowed. I like the title because I can use it to describe the process by which I'm writing. "Threepenny" - people can add their two cents worth via the comment feature, then I take it and add my interpretation - my owe cent (or the third penny, as it were).

How do I participate?

When November starts I will announce the time I anticipate being online and writing. I will post those times at the top of this page. During the posted times, come visit me at the site where I am writing (www.crushedmuffin.com/Novel). I will be writing my story in the left hand column of the page, and you should see new text appear at the bottom as I go. The right hand column will have a box where you can leave comments. If you'd like to help direct the action of the story, leave a comment in the box. Then read along as I incorporate it into the story before your eyes.

Read the Story

Once November rolls around, I will post pages I complete at the end of the day here - this way you can read the archive at your leisure, or come to the live site, and see the new work in progress.

Here is a link to the Archives, taken from the live sessions. Just click on the session you want to read. You'll see what I wrote that day, as well as the comments and suggestions that were made.

Or, here is a "cleaned up " copy- broken down by day, and edited for spelling and grammar.
