(La Joconde – Mussee du Louvre (Mona Lisa))
Janey
Ain't the Mona Lisa supposed to be smilin' cause she's got a
secret or somethin'? Today she does. I’m writing this card now, as Luke
and me are making plans. I'm gonna wait to put it in the box 'til the
day we leave, though. Luke was sickened by how Morgan's being treated,
too. So me and him are going to get her outta here. Luke says we gotta
get provisions and shit first, and plan where we are going. Says it
sucked coming up here, so he wants to plan better. I still haven't seen
Morgan – but her folks have to let her go to school, so on the first
day we're breaking her out then – packing clothes and stuff for her as
we can get it. Luke figures he can get Brian's dad's junked chevy
runnin' for at least long enough to get us outta the county. I'll write
you when we get to where we're going, so don't freak out when my mom
calls yours telling her we bolted. And, ' course, don't tell her where
we are

Guess who showed up here not 2 hours after your card. Luke hitched
hiked all the way here, walking some bits. Says it took him near 2 days
to get the hang of it. He does look worse for it, though, and he's
crashin' right now in my bed. My mom's probably gonna call yours
tonight bout it, even though Luke'll protest.
Morgan told her mom that her step-dad was a bastard who deserved to
suffer in the deepest pit of hell – and her mom hit her. Her mom! Hell,
she's gotta get out of there if that's how it's going to be. But Morgan
won't see anyone. She's stopped talking to people, too. I haven't seen
her in 3 days – only heard second hand about the slap. Maybe Luke'll
help me get her out of there. Shit, I hope so.

We were hanging down by the river, Morgan, Jamie and me, where Copper
Run creek feeds into it, and I was wadin’ and found this really cool
stone. It’s ‘bout the size of my palm, almost round, but
thin. I was really smooth, too. There are these red
and black swirls in it, and one side is flecked with gray. Jamie
was looking for skipping stones, so I pocketed it. It was too
cool to throw away. Later, when Jamie went down river to harass
some turtles or somethin’, I showed the stone to Morgan. She just kinda
looked at it for a while, not even touching it, but leaving it in my
hand. After a while she looked up at me, and in a quiet voice
asked if she could have it. She sounded so damn timid, didn’t
just snatch it, like I was half expecting. I would have said no,
but she also seemed sad. It pisses me off because I know
her stepdad is who made her this way. It’s not right.

Yeah, it’s been awhile since I wrote, but its ‘cause I’ve been in
hospital, then with a cast. You can bet my mom
was pissed off at the bill, I kept hearing ‘bout it,
you think it cost us the house. Not like it’s even really a
house, but anyways, your probly wonderin how I broke my
arm. I fell from a tree in Morgan’s yard. They moved into
an actual house, two stories and everything, when her mom
remarried. But as I said, he’s a prick who beats
them. I was trying to convince Morgan to run
away, actually we were going down to see youguys or I
was gonna try see if you and Luke wanted to scram and meet
us halfway. I was telling her my plan win the
bastard barged into the room, drunk and yellin’ and lookin’ for a
fight he could win. I got mad and leapt for him, from the
tree. I missed the roof and snap broke my arm.

Sorry I've not written lately. My brother left. He had this big fight
w/ Gareth and he just snuck off that night, left us a note like "don't
worry I'll be fine, I'll keep in touch" only he hasn't. Gareth & me
went up to the old homestead in case he went there but we didn't see
him or any footprints.
Guess he was scared Gareth'd turn out to be like Morgan's stepdad or my
dad, he always beat up on Luke but not me. I don't like Gareth either
but he's not mean he just yells & anyway Luke deserved to get
yelled at. He was really stoned when he came home & I think him and
Tar were tripping on mushrooms. But Gareth wasn't going to hurt him, he
shouldn't of panicked.
If he happens to be up there, tell him to fucking call home Mom's about
freaking out. And that he's a jerk for leaving me here. He took Tar but
not me.

PS tell Morgan if it gets really bad she's welcome to come down here.
We won't tell her stepdad where she is.

Morgan got in a fight with her step-dad today. Got
fed up of him taking his problems out on her and her mom. She’s
got a real shiner from where he smacked her one. I keep telling
her to bail, find somewhere else to stay, but she
says she’s strong and can handle it, and she wants to show her
mom what it’s like to be strong, so she stays.
I told her I’d sneak back into the police records and find a different
unsolved deaths, or ones that were fishy that written off as accidents
to find a solution, but she just kinda smiled and said “Naw, but
it’s a sweet idea.) I may do it anyway, cause I
can’t stand the idea of him hittin’ her, and who knows what
else. She’s wearin long sleeves. I think coverin some
burns. I just wanna kill that bastard.

They found out the reason “John Doe’” mouth was all messed up. And they
know for certain it was a him. Cause of death proves he was a stupid
bastard, too. He had be inhalin’ something to get high (some chemical
shit) and then went to take a drag from the ciggerate (which he dropped
and burned him elsewhere, too).
His face blew up. The chemical was explosive, and he blew up.
The papers say he’s died of an accident, but Morgan and me snuck in and
read the report. Well, she distracted the punk-as cop, Fitz, you know,
the new guy, looks too young, and I read the report.
Fitz got chewed out for flirting on duty too, it was beautiful.

Whoa. A dead body? Cool! I mean, it's not cool that somebody died, but
you know what I mean. Nothing that interesting happens here. Well, it's
a good thing it didn't happen here, our ice doesn't last. Would've been
just a skeleton probably, and they'd never figure out who it was.
Just normal and boring here.
Mom has a boyfriend now, Gareth. He was a friend of my parents' before.
I used to think he was funny but now he mostly gets on my nerves,
hanging around here all the time.
She's getting some shit for it, though. People from church not talking
to her and all. They all look away when we walk in. She says she don't
give a damn, it's her life not theirs. Mom's pretty cool sometimes

Damn, these are ugly pictures. I see why old lady Meyers was
eager to sell ‘em.
Oh – I didn’t tell ya, a body washed up in Copper Run creak. I
mean, a real body. Cops say he’s been dead at least a month. They think
it’s a he. Jamie found it, hangin out, he ran to get me, but I figured
he was full of shit. Morgan believed him though – said he’s not smart
enough to make up somethin like that. I got to see it for a bit before
the cops came. It was gross, but cool. I think it got caught in the ice
during the winter – it wasn’t too messed up – I mean for a month old.
The mouth was all fucked up, though. I’ll tell you if they find out who
it is.

Don't let those guys get to you. They're idiots. Morgan's cool, I
remember her from last time we were up there. I like her. If Mom says
okay -- I asked her and guess what, she said maybe, if there's money
(hey! I'm psychic!) -- you & me & Luke & Morgan oughtta get
together and kick their stupid asses.
Or somebody's, at least.

Janey (-ugly building!)
I was looking in the dumpsters behind KMart, lookin for broken
merchandise and well, just stuff. I had crawled in one, and when I was
out of sight, Brian and Jamie came out. They were smokin’ – but I know
they weren’t on break, they’re not allowed to go on breaks at the same
time anymore. They were talkin’ ‘bout Morgan, pickin’ on her bad. I had
to be careful to not say nothin. When they went in I punched the
dumpster, picturing their faces. I was so mad. They called her a slut
and worse. I don’t think I’ll tell her, cause she’d just yell at them,
and they’d probably get in a fight. Had to lie bout why my knuckles
were bleedin’ though. She took it out on the cat I said done it. It was
a stray, but I still felt bad.

Hey Gram -
Sorry I didn't answer you
sooner. Kept forgetting to get postcards. I wanted to steal some cool
ones from the store, but I'm not so great at that & wasn't about to
ask Luke to get them for me. I guess you heard about Dad, huh? My mom
& yours must have talked since then if you're sending stuff to the
new address. Anyway we moved here a couple days after the funeral. I
hate it here. The trailers are too close together, you can hear
everything and I do mean EVERYTHING. Y'd be amazed who's doing what
with who at night. Tried to joke about it w/ Luke but you know him, he
just pretended like he didn't hear nothing. God forbid his little
sister know anything about sex, right? Man, I miss hanging out w/ y'all.
People here suck. Maybe
Mom'll let us come up there in the summer. No, she'll say maybe, if
there's money. & you know there never is.
PS from my bro: Someday one of
us gotta get rick and famous just to spite the world. And then we'll
all go to Paris.

Janey- so guess where I’ve been (arrow to the word Paris on the back of
the card). No, not really.
(frowny tounge stuck out face)
but it would be nice to get to see Paris. Well, to see anywhere other
than here, really. Can’t wait til I’m old enough to leave –or get
enough $ Probably won’t . If I get to be on the road, I’ll send
ya post cards of places I really go. Got these for a dime at old lady’
Meyers garage sale. She had a lot of cool shit, and I almost got the
knife instead, but Morgan was being a pain and wouldn’t loan me the
extra buck I needed. And there were people crawling all over the place
helpin her our, so I couldn’t pocket it. It was a really cool knife,
thou, butterfly style, from her husbands military days I guess. Most of
the stuff she was sellin was his, cause he died last month. Anyway, we
should try to go to Paris someday. Maybe to live, even. – Gram
